This disk presents the complete 'Other Sides of Sonic Youth' improvised live performance from the 2005 Roskilde Festival in Denmark, featuring Sonic Youth (with Jim O'Rourke) and guests Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, and Japanese sound artist Masami Akita (aka Merzbow). The single piece performed was a structured improvisation which for 60 minutes added and subtracted musicians one by one until only Masami was left onstage. The harsher metallic tones of Teimo and earlier albums are gone on Aubrite, the record is a deep blur of incredible bass tones, from which the vaguest music emerges, unfolding over long periods. (07/22/08 12:41) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	asmus tietchens - biotop germany's asmus tietchens has been creating music since 1965 when he began manipulating tape-machines. in 1971 he bought a synthesizer and has been exploring its possibilities, and has never looked back. in the 70's he became involved with sky records, appearing for example on the album titled "cluster & eno", but it was not until the 80's that tietchens' own music was released, of which several early lp's appeared on sky. these records were of playfully rhythmic, often melodic music, but not representative of tietchens' ideas about music. in 1984 united dairies issued "formen letzer hausmusik", an album of more powerful concrete and industrial compositions, shedding a new light on the composer's work to both listeners and other musicians, unaware of his powerful music. since then an abundance of material has been issued (close to 20 releases in various formats and about 30 compilation appearances) all in a highly experimental vein. while having a large influence on the explosion of industrial music during the past 15 years, tietchens has never belonged to any of its musical, philosophical movements, or styles and has never really attempted to create a "style" of his own. tietchens' releases are simply the musical exploration of the studio, idea, or collaborative situation at that given time. "my music is composed of aesthetic and extraordinary events which make statements for themselves, but there is absolutely no message. for myself the music most definitely has a meaning. i am an adventurer in the studio... my aim is to discover the white dots on the landscape of sound, territories where no others have travelled." Asmus Tietchens - Biotop (2003) iannis xenakis - electronic music iannis xenakis is without a doubt one of the major figures in the development of music in the 20th century. in 1957, he joined pierre schaeffer and others at the grm (groupe de recherches musicales) in paris, and it was there that xenakis composed his early works for electronic tape. xenakis' distinct sound is already apparent in "diamorphoses" (1957) which incorporates sounds of distant earthquakes, car crashes, jet engines, and other 'noise-like' sounds. his distinct sound is also apparent in "concret ph" (1958), based on the sounds of burning charcoal. "concret ph" was played along with varese's "poème electronique" in 1958 in the philips pavilion at the brussels world's fair, which xenakis (also architect, mathematician and engineer) designed. (07/22/08 13:24) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	this blog has been posting up a bunch of King Crimson bootlegs recently, but they are in OGG format. the program Switch works for me to convert. blog: http://sakalli.blog.hr/ King Crimson - KCCC10 Live at NYC (1974) (@256) (Review from progreviews.com progarchives.com) This concert was recorded at Central Park, New York, USA, July 1, 1974. The show begins with a tape playing then recent Fripp & Eno collaboration "No Pussyfooting", and then the band kicks in with a fine version of "21st Century Schizoid Man" featuring a Fripp on fire. The following "Lament" is also a good version of the song, there's a furious interplay going on between Bruford and Wetton especially! The tuning before "Exiles" morphs into a very oppressive and chaotic improvisation, which then transmutes to the mantra and then as the main song. The contrasts are exceptionally fine here, the beautiful minor ballad rises from the maelstorm of a violent nightmare. Then comes the full-improvised number, named as "Cerberus", which is an OK number. The quarrels within the band had escalated, and it can be heard in these "blows", the rhythm section dominates the playing, and Fripp and Cross try to punch in their melodic passages desperately. On "Fracture", Wetton's bass performance is stunningly virtuosic (or maybe just really, really loud), and gives the piece an almost funky flavor here that I've never heard on any other recording. Definitely one of my favorite renditions of this piece. The performance of "Starless" is blazing, and pretty close to the version that ended up on Red, although unfortunately the volume level seems to peter out a bit just as the climax hits. David Cross' performance on "The Talking Drum" is definitely notable, and this piece in general is quite brutal here. "Larks' Tongues Part 2" is almost anticlimactic as a closer, but still has sections that burn. Robert Fripp claimed that this concert, the last concert King Crimson played in the 1970s, was the only one that matched the fury and intensity of the 1969 live band. Unfortunately the sound quality of this release is average, but still pleasurable. I finally got it together to rip it again this time @320 from my original vinyl. Still immersed in the burgeoning electronic jazz-rock explosion of the times, Cannonball Adderley goes further toward a rapprochement with the rock and soul audiences than ever before on this fascinating, overlooked double album. For starters, he recorded it live at West Hollywood's Troubadour club, then known as a showcase for folk and rock acts. He also imported additional players into his quintet, expanding into exotic percussion effects with Airto Moreira (whom Miles Davis had previously featured), hard rock guitar with session man Mike Deasy, fiery tenor sax from the young Ernie Watts, and occasional seasoning from conguero Buck Clarke and clarinetist Alvin Batiste. "Now I don't give a damn whether you can count or not, we still are the Cannonball Adderley Quintet!," quoth the leader, who is in loose, loquacious form throughout the set (the jazz world badly misses his witty verbal intros). With Joe Zawinul now flying off to Weather Report, his replacement is an even more electronically minded pianist, George Duke, who levitates into the outer limits with his Echoplex and ring modulator and proves to be a solid comper. But Zawinul is not forgotten, for the band pursues a long, probing, atmospheric excursion on his tune, "Dr. Honouris Causa." Adderley generously gives Deasy two contrasting feature numbers -- "Little Benny Hen", a raucous, amateurishly sung blues/rock piece, and "Zanek," a great countrified tune with an avant-garde freakout at the climax -- and all of the other guests save Clarke get single solo features. Brother Nat Adderley gamely visits the outside on cornet while Cannonball doubles with increasing adventurousness on soprano and alto and bassist Walter Booker and drummer Roy McCurdy deftly handle all of the changes of style. Cannonball adeptly keeps pace with Miles Davis, his former boss - the driving "The Chocolate Nuisance" could easily be a first cousin of "Pharoah's Dance" on "Bitches Brew" - while not abandoning his funky soul-jazz base nor the special audience-friendly ambience of his concerts. Unlike Adderley's other two-for-one-priced double albums of the '70s, this one was inexplicably sold at full price, which probably limited its sales and might partly explain why it remains surprisingly hard to find in used LP bins. This one's for Kristof. Julian "Cannonball" Adderley's 1969 album COUNTRY PREACHER is not only one of his best works but one of the pinnacles of the entire soul-jazz movement. Though Yusef Lateef, Herbie Mann, Jimmy Smith, and others made outstanding records in this under-appreciated sub-genre, COUNTRY PREACHER is the album that delivers all of the strengths of soul jazz with few of its weaknesses. A stellar combo, featuring Adderley's cornetist brother Nat, standout electric pianist Joe Zawinul, and the killer rhythm section of bassist Walter Booker and drummer Roy McCurdy, gives Adderley's alto and, unusually for him, soprano sax just the sort of groove-oriented, percussive setting his hard-edged and intense sound needs. The gospel-based titled track is wonderful, but "Afro-Spanish Omelette", a medley of Caribbean-style workouts, is one of the highlights of Adderley's entire career. TRACKLIST 01.
