Weather Report - 1978-06-28 - Tokyo, Japan
BACK TO BLACK - WEATHER REPORTJanuary 23, 2009 - 3:39 amBlack music goes hand-in-hand with civil rights for African-Americans. And you can dance to it. So here's the weather report from 1971. A stormy night for all. Click on the panels for a better view or to download artwork. WEATHER REPORT
Other than "Vienna, November 1971″, there are no other details on our copy of the CD but db etree provided the setlist and the lineup. The group had only released their self-titled debut album in May 1971 and this Vienna gig looked like an impressive showcase for the avant-jazz group. Unlike many new groups, saxophonist Wayne Shorter and keyboardist Joe Zawinul were not unknowns nor were they novices. And the "new" group
offered them the chance to stretch their musical wings, especially when it came to improvisations.
This Vienna gig would eventually lead to a successful Japan tour in 1972 and the recording and release of the Live In Tokyo album. As with Weather Report's music, the details are in the intricate interplay between the instruments and readers can get a glimpse of the group's music through Rolling Stone magazine's Robert Palmer's review of the group's second album, I Sing The Body Electric (1972), the second side featuring live tracks from their Japan tour. Palmer called it a "beautiful, near perfect LP," and went on to describe the band's live side as "a group that has reorganized the role of the traditional rhythm section in an unusual way. Joe Zawinul uses his electronic keyboard like a hornplayer… to engage in a dialogue of equals with saxophonist Shorter. Vitous uses his bass as a third voice in this ongoing conversation, which often leaves drummer Gravatt to handle the rhythmic chores, a job he performs with style and grace." DownBeat's Gary Giddins declared, "there is no question that Weather Report is into something new and stimulating." BOB DYLAN - EMPIRE BURLESQUE OUTTAKESJanuary 21, 2009 - 4:21 amClick on the panels for a better view or to download artwork. BOB DYLAN
After more than 20 years, opinion is still divided when it comes to Bob Dylan's 23rd studio album, Empire Burlesque (1985). According to the wikipedia, "fans and critics continue to debate the album's merits, especially when compared to Dylan's classics of the 1960s, '70s and 2000s." Kurt Loder, reviewing the album in Rolling Stone magazine, called the album "a blast of real rock & roll, funneled through a dense, roiling production - custom-chopped-and-channeled by remix wiz Arthur Baker - that affords Dylan more pure street-beat credibility than he has aspired to since… well, pick your favorite faraway year. Could there be actual hits hunkering here? Is Dylan "back"? Again? One is tempted to trumpet some such tidings. "Because of the basic nature of its material, however elliptically presented, Empire Burlesque is bound to confound and exasperate many listeners. I continue to miss the emotional specificity of past Dylan masterworks, like "Tangled Up in Blue," and grow weary of his woozier generalities ("Emotionally Yours" could be about a lover, or it could be about Jesus; it's so lacking in detail, I can't imagine how anyone could care). But I am heartened when he cranks up and rocks out, as he does here. Dylan may never resolve the tension between spiritual conviction and rock & roll kicks, but I like to think he's straying in the right direction." In 1992, Sick Cat released Clean Cuts, a collection of Empire Burlesque outtakes. As bobsboots.com pointed out: "The biggest problem with this release is in trying to put too many tracks on it! The technology of the day allowed 70 to 72 minutes recording time. This disc is 72:02. However, to achieve that time constraint of the CD, the songs were mastered about 10 per cent too fast." A Dylan fan took the trouble to speed-correct the tracks and these are offered here. JOE McPHEE - ALBERT AYLER TRIBUTE 2008January 19, 2009 - 4:23 amClick on the panels for a better view or to download artwork. JOE McPHEE
Multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee might have been born in Miami but until the 1990s, he was probably better known in Europe than in the United States. According to the wikipedia, he taught himself saxophone at the age of 32 after experiencing the music of John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman. In an interview, McPhee noted: "One of the most memorable moments of my life will have to be the funeral of John Coltrane. As sad as his passing was, the funeral was a glorious affirmation of all that he was and that he gave to us… it was a celebration of life. Musical selections were performed by Ornette's classic trio of the Golden Circle period and Albert Ayler's band. This experience informs my work to this day." Music writer Michael Anton Parker wrote that McPhee had fully initiated himself into the secrets of Albert Ayler's gripping soul cry in the late '60s after returning home from his stint as a musician in the Army, but "McPhee's expressive range is so much broader than Ayler's that his music rarely finds the time to drop hints of this deep knowledge." And Parker goes on to say that McPhee acknowledged his gratitude to Ayler through his affectionate Albert Ayler 2000 Project. Probably as a celebration of the election of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States and the free jazz spirit, McPhee did a tribute to Albert Ayler when he performed at the Club W 71 in Weikersheim, Germany. As McPhee notes on his website: "Our songs are meant for singing, dancing, celebrating life." Thanks to hamhen for sharing these tracks on the Dime site. LED ZEPPELIN - LIVE IN PARIS 1969January 17, 2009 - 4:21 amClick on the panels for a better view or to download artwork. LED ZEPPELIN
If this show sounds familiar, yes, it has been offered before [click here]. However, previous versions of the show were taken from the FM broadcast - all with the DJ chatter (some tried to remove the DJ chatter or just clipped it out, losing some of the music). hanks to jameskg for sharing this new version on the internet. This is what jameskg noted: "This is the first release of the audio, cut and ready to broadcast by the radio station, BEFORE they broadcast it and the DJ talked all over it. This isn't the raw tape, but the cut-together the station did to prepare for broadcast." TCOLZ packaged this as a two-CD set - the other disc is the "regular" FM broadcast version. This is what Collectors Music Reviews noted:

LED ZEP LIVE AT FILLMORE WEST 1969January 16, 2009 - 3:41 am Click on the panels for a better view or to download artwork. LED ZEPPELIN
This Led Zeppelin gig has been circulating under different names - just to list a few: on LP as The Rising Of The Zeppelin (no label) and San Francisco '69 (no label); and on CD as Best Of 1969 Tour (Forever Standard Series), Black Beauty (Wendy Records), Blues Anytime (Empress Valley Supreme Disc), Cabala (CD Company SRL), Conquering California (Dinopower Records), Cracker Jack Blues (Jelly Roll), The Dancing Avocado (Small Fish CD-R), The Dancing Avocado - Supreme Edition (Small Fish CD-R), Fillmore 69 (House Of Elrond), Fillmore West (Last Stand Disc) and Fillmore West 1969 (Scorpio). Add to that list is this recent version from Godfather Records. This is the write-up posted at Collectors Music Reviews: "Long rumoured to be stolen directly from Bill Graham's vaults, this show has everything a Zephead could want and so much more. Pure Psychodelia with a mixture of raw power make for a Red Hot set. Every member of the band is in fine shape and turns in an inspired performance. Robert's voice sounds amazing and the rest of the group are as tight as can be. Halfway through this recording John Paul Jones' bass amp blows up but he somehow manages to get through the rest of the gig. "Upon writing this review I sat down and compared this version to the Empress Valley release, Listen To The Difference, and I'm leaning towards this release (sounding a bit cleaner). There's just a bit more body and depth to this release which definitely takes it to another level. This recording has long been thought to be a soundboard recording due to how well balanced the instruments are. Robert's voice is a bit lower than everyone else. Coming from two microphones placed directly on stage could explain why his voice is a bit lower. The instruments are picked up well but the microphones are placed behind the throw of the main PA speakers." If you don't own or have not listened to any early Led Zep gigs, this is certainly a good place to start. Thanks to thewall68 for sharing the tracks on the internet.
